Intro

What is VIPoma?

a rare endocrine tumor that overproduces vasoactive intestinal peptide

What is the common presentation of VIPoma?

  • large volume diarrhoea
  • weight loss

cause a specific syndrome:

  • dehydration
  • hypokalemia
  • hypercalcemia
  • hyperglycemia
  • achlorhydria
  • acidosis
  • flushing
  • hypotension (from vasodilation)

How is VIPoma diagnosed?

fasting VIP plasma level

What are the main associations of VIPoma?

sometimes associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1

What is the function of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) in the GI system?

  • smooth muscle relaxation (lower esophageal sphincter, stomach, gallbladder)
  • stimulate secretion of water into pancreatic juice and bile
  • cause inhibition of gastric acid secretion and absorption from the intestinal lumen
